Advanced
There are a wide choice of options for a qualified driver to increase their knowledge and driving skills - gaining various qualifications.
Here are some suggestions:
INSTITUTE of ADVANCED MOTORISTS - IAM
Mike is an IAM registered instructor and can take you through your Roadcraft training preparing you for your Observed Run and your gaining Advanced Driver status and membership to the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
Recognising that the majority of collisions are caused by driver error, the IAM’s Advanced Driving Test was introduced in 1956 with the specific objective of significantly improving driving standards using the principles of advanced driving pioneered and applied with great success by the Metropolitan Police. The tests are now accredited by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA).
The Advanced Test is not exclusively about safety, but encourages the driver to feel confident on the road, to make good progress, and to get greater enjoyment from the experience.
You either Pass or Fail the IAM Advanced driving test.
ROYAL SOCIETY of PROTECTION ACCIDENTS - ROSPA
The examiner will expect your vehicle to appear roadworthy and the view through the windscreen and windows to be clear.
Before starting you should be prepared, if asked, to carry out or describe the daily or weekly checks that you do on your vehicle.
Shortly after moving off you should carry out a moving brake test if conditions permit. A brake check that tests the seat belts is not necessary.
He will consider the skills you demonstrate in the following areas:
- Use of Controls
- Driving performance
- General ability
There is a grading system for passing the test:
- Gold
- Silver
- Bronze
DIAMOND ADVANCED TEST (Car)
The DIAmond Advanced test provides candidates with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills over a route of between 16 and 20 miles (25-32km). The route contains a variety of road and traffic conditions including, where possible, motorways. Candidates will be assessed on controlling their vehicle through set manoeuvres relevant to the vehicle used for the test, and eco-safe driving.
Who should consider taking this test?
Candidates making fewer than seven driving faults (no serious or dangerous faults) will be awarded a pass at advanced level.
